Do you have letters you'd like to contribute? Please read the following message from Whitman Archivist, Melissa Salrin.
Thank you so much for your interest in helping us to expand the Whitman College Letter Project.
When possible, we would prefer originals be submitted rather than photocopies or scans, for several reasons:
1) Original, un-excerpted letters provide a richer basis of analysis for researchers, and 2) if we do the digitization work ourselves, we can ensure uniformity of file formats, resolution, etc. for storage and ease of use. It is also much easier to verify the authenticity of original hard copies over digital materials.
Please see below for a Deed of Gift (in pdf) which we ask all of our donors to sign; this document formally signals that the papers become the property of the archives and provides for the transfer of copyright (simply to facilitate research use of the collection). Having a donation agreement in place is in keeping with archival best practices and enables us to allocate appropriate materials and labor to preserve and promote access to these holdings.
In addition to the deed of gift, we also ask all contributors to the project to provide the following information about their submitted materials:
Full name of letter writer
Full name of letter recipient
Alumni graduation year
Contact information of submitter (email, snail mail address, and phone)
Mail your letters to:
Whitman College Alumni Office
Attn: Whitman Letter Project
345 Boyer Avenue
Walla Walla, WA 99362
Please contact Melissa Salrin, archivist at Whitman College and Northwest Archives, with any questions or concerns: salrinmm@whitman.edu or (509)-526-4731. Thank you in advance for your assistance in allowing us to make these letters more widely accessible and useful for scholarship.
